    Official Website: http://www.mcas.k12.in.us
    Location: Michigan City, Indiana, USA
    Snapshot
~1,000 Kubuntu wired desktop clients in English & Social Studies One to One classrooms
~30 wireless Kubuntu laptops in Science classrooms
~1,200 students logging into Moodle daily
    Project Background
In 2005 Michigan City Area Schools began involvement in the Indiana inACCESS computer grant program.
    Project Size
~1,000 of 4,000 PC's district wide running Linux
    Technology Overview
Kubuntu desktops and laptops, single sign-on via LDAP to Novell eDirectory servers (currently)
    Successful Strategies
Start with small successes that can make huge impacts instead of spreading yourself thin trying to get too much done right away
Personal Example: In our case, Indiana's inAccess (One-to-One) program focusing on 5 English classrooms to start with, instead of shot gunning it in five different subjects. Why? Teachers teamed together and helped one another. The following year more teachers were interested in joining the program because of the success in the pervious five. Five more English labs were added the following year as a result. Then we branched out into Social Studies.
    Success Stories
A 2007 study of the project showed that One-to-One classrooms are popular with both teachers and students, and teachers effectively using the technology gained 5 to 10 minutes of instruction time per class period. “The systems are intuitively easy to use, keep students engaged, and promote higher-order thinking,” says McGuire. “And because they use open source technology, they are extremely cost-effective.”
    Attendance up, disruptions down
    Short Term Goals
Working closely with Revolution Linux to open two new schools (Lake Hills and Pine Elementary, ~420 pc's each) running Open Source technology from the top-down
Open Source servers running open source software for all critical services including Authentication, File and Print, DNS, DHCP, Backups, etc.
Open Source clients running open source software including Open Office, etc.
    Long Term Goals
First converting the remaining Elementary Schools over to Open Source technology
Second converting 3 Middle Schools and then 1 High School
